Neck & Upper Back
Neck and upper back pain can be debilitating, making it difficult to carry out daily tasks. Belmont Chiropractic Rondebosch uses the full spectrum of chiropractic treatments to address the source of the pain and underlying causes to heal the injury and bring relief from pain.
Degenerative Disk
Degenerative Disk Disease (DDD) back and neck pain. It’s the result of normal wear and tear that occurs as we get older. That doesn’t mean it can’t be treated. After diagnosis, a chiropractor can devise a rehabilitation programme to relieve pain and restore mobility.
Degenerative Disk Symptoms
- Chronic dull pain around the affected disc.
- Pain becomes more severe for a period of time (days or weeks).
- Pain that affects your neck, upper and lower back, buttocks, and upper thighs, as well as from your shoulder to your hand.
- Pain that worsens with bending, twisting, and lifting items.
- Pain when sitting or standing for a long time.
- Feeling as though your spine has locked in place, which makes you feel as though it can’t support your body anymore.
- Severely painful muscle spasms.
- Stiffness and limited range of motion.
- Pain reduces with gentle stretches provided by your chiropractor and regularly moving or changing positions, so you don’t sit or stand still for long.
Degenerative Disk Causes
- Inflammation of a nerve root that can affect the shoulder and arm (cervical disk degeneration) and the hips or legs (lumbar disk degeneration).
- Drying of the spinal disks, which cushion the gap between the vertebrae. This causes the vertebrae to grate against each other and wear away, which leads to instability.
- Intense physical work, sport, and a sudden injury.
- Genetic predisposition to degeneration of disks.
- Spinal disease, including ankylosing spondylitis.
Chiropractic Treatments
- Myofascial release techniques for pain relief might be included in your rehabilitation programme.
- Pain control modalities, including ultrasound, dietary adjustments, and stress management techniques.
- Joint mobilisation, including manual joint stretching.
- Spinal manipulation or spinal adjustment and instrument-assisted manipulation performed by a chiropractor.
- Corrective actions that include flexion-distraction
Pinched Nerve
A pinched nerve (cervical radiculopathy) can cause neurological dysfunction, affecting your neck’s nerve roots. Pinched nerves cause pain and stiffness in your neck, shoulder, and arm. A proper diagnosis is necessary for your chiropractor to create a rehabilitation programme that heals the specific nerve root and relieves pain and tension around the affected area.
Pinched Nerve Symptoms
- Pain in the area of compression
- Sciatica which radiates from your hips down your leg.
- Radicular pain which radiates from your spine into your hips and legs.
- Numbness and/or burning sensation and/or tingling, like pins and needles.
- A feeling of weakness and lack of support in the spine.
Pinched Nerve Causes
- Age increases the risk of degenerative disk disease (cervical spondylosis) and slipped disks (herniated disk) in your neck.
- Cervical spondylosis is related to oesteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Stiffening of vertabrae.
- Bone spurs are formed where vertebrae collapse, which can pinch a nerve root.
- A sudden injury can crack a vertebrae disk.
- Activities and habits with repetitive movements and lack of exercise.
Chiropractic Treatments
- Myofascial release to release trigger points and loosen muscles to improve circulation and provide pain relief.
- Pain control modalities, including pain killers.
- Joint mobilisation and postural correction.
- Spinal manipulation and adjustment to realign joints and vertebrae.
- Corrective actions include the application of controlled force to realign joints and vertebrae.
Posture Muscle spasms
Poor posture puts pressure on muscles and ligaments and reduces the natural support of your back. Muscles not affected compensate for this weakness, and muscle spasms result. A successful diagnosis by a chiropractor can release the tension and lessen the occurrence of muscle spasms.
Posture Muscle Spasms Symptoms
- A slight involuntary twitch or jumping feeling which can get so bad that the pain becomes almost unbearable.
- Weakness and numbness in your extremities.
- Light-headedness, loss of coordination, and, in some cases, loss of control over bodily functions.
- Pain in the affected area which can last for seconds or days.
- Sudden sharp pain in deep muscle tissue.
- Slow movement or paralysis.
- Disrupted sleep due to pain and uncomfortable twitching.
Posture Muscle Spasms Causes
- Strain resulting from exercise and repetitive movements in your job.
- Carrying something heavy one-handed or two-handed.
- Sleeping awkwardly or holding an unnatural position for a long time.
- Slouching when walking or sitting.
- Dehydration can lead to muscle spasms.
- Health conditions include meningitis, slipped disk, arthritis, fusing of the spine, and injury from a fall.
Chiropractic Treatments
- Myofascial release or soft tissue manipulation in the affected area.
- Pain control modalities, like strengthening exercises that your chiropractor includes in your rehabilitation programme.
- Joint mobilisation to improve flexibility and range of motion.
- Stabilisation or manipulation that includes spinal adjustment and joint manipulation
- Corrective actions include therapeutic stretches and electrical stimulation.
Whiplash
Whiplash results from a sudden jerking movement to your neck. It can be successfully treated if you stick to the rehabilitation programme provided by your chiropractor. Rehabilitation time can be a few days or a few weeks.
Whiplash Symptoms
- The whipping movement results in a stiff and painful neck, which limits movement.
- Pain that gets increases when you move your neck.
- Light-headedness and headaches at the top of your neck, usually where the pain is worst.
- Tenderness and tingling that extends to your back and down your arms.
- Blurred vision and tinnitus.
- Lingering fatigue.
- Trouble sleeping and concentrating.
- Memory is sometimes affected.
Whiplash Causes
- Sudden, quick back-and-forth movement in your neck.
- Injury caused by traffic collisions, contact sports, including soccer, rugby, boxing, and even horse riding.
- Physical attack, including a direct hit to the head and injury from a fall.
Chiropractic Treatments
- Myofascial release and trigger point therapy to release tension in the soft tissue around the affected area.
- Pain control modalities, including ultrasound and stretching exercises your chiropractor includes in your rehabilitation programme.
- Joint mobilisation is slow, controlled manipulation of the affected joints to restore range of motion.
- Stabilisation to address damaging movement patterns. Manipulation includes spinal adjustment and manual manipulation.
- Corrective actions, including instrument-assisted manipulation and flexion-distraction technique.
